The cost of bad communications

In April 2010 BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico made headlines – not just for the size of the spill, but for the ill-timed and insensitive comments made to the media by BP’s then-CEO Tony Hayward. EBM and others use his comments about “wanting my life back” as an example of what NOT to say in a sensitive interview. Could better communications during the accident have helped create a more positive image of BP and perhaps have resulted in a lower fine?
